From a sleepy little hamlet, amongst the dense forest, under the erstwhile princely state of Rewa Singrauli area now covers the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh and a part of Sonebhadera district of Uttar Pradesh and has becomethe land of opportunity attracting investment worth 1 lakh crores in last five years.

Singrauli at early age

Singrauli is formed of eastern part of MP and adjoining Southern part of District Sonebhadra. Earlier it was called as Shringavali and was full of dense forests inhabited by wild animals. This place was so treacherous that Kings of Rewa state used it as an open air prison for detaining criminals.

Rihand Dam in Singrauli

In 1954, construction of a concrete gravity dam started on River Rihand which is a tributary of Son river and one of the main rivers of UP and Chhattisgarh. This large scale dam was inaugurated by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nerhu in 1962.

Coal Mining

In 1960’s rich coal deposit spanning over an area of 2200 Sq KM were discovered here. Northern Coalfields Ltd currently operates in large opencast mines generating around 80.22 MT of coal annually making this the largest cluster of coal mining in India.

Power Generation

Abundant availability of coal and water made Singrauli an ideal place to setup thermal power generating units. In 1975 NTPC setup its first power plant named Singrauli in Shaktinagar and went on to setup two more super thermal power plants Vindhyachal and Rihand. State of UP also setup 2 power plants in the vicinity at Anapara and Obra.

Industrialization

Late 2000’s saw the industrialization of Singrauli increase exponentially with an investment of Rs 100000 Crore in power generation, captive mining and aluminium production by leading corporate houses like Reliance, Aditya Birla group, Essar, Jaypee group and Lanco. It today generates 25000MW of electricity and is known as Power Capital of India.

Growth as city

Rapid Industrialization and population growth of the area fueled its development. Also Singrauli was carved out as a separate district in 2008. It now boasts of amenities at par with bigger cities and has very good educational facilities upto school level with the network of DPS, DAV, KV and St. Joseph, aided by the corporate sector.
